Intrepid 6140 Director single component
failure. Together, these features sup-
port nondisruptive maintenance and
upgrades without loss of data access.
Multiple Directors can be used to create
a scalable enterprise SAN backbone
that supports consolidated storage
management applications such as disk
sharing, tape pooling and enterprise-
wide data sharing.
Industry-standard Fibre Channel
connectivity
The Director provides Fibre Channel
connectivity to servers, storage and
McDATA Fabric Switches:

S/390 servers
• IBM ~ pSeries and selected RS/
6000 servers
• IBM ~ iSeries and selected AS/
400™ servers
• IBM ~ xSeries and selected
Netfinity servers
• Other Intel-based servers with
Microsoft™ Windows NT™ and Windows
2000®, Netware and Linux
• Selected Sun and HP servers
• IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage

Multiple configuration options
The Director provides a wide range of
configuration options. Universal Port
Module (UPM) provides four Fibre
Channel ports. Each port delivers up to
200 MB/sec, full-duplex data transfer.
Enterprise Fabric Connectivity (EFC)
Management software
EFC Management software is
designed to centralize the manage-
ment of multiple, distributed Directors
in an enterprise-wide Fibre Channel
fabric. Designed for usability, this flex-
ible software simplifies the addition
of managed Directors as the enter-
prise Fibre Channel fabric grows.
Simplified operation of multiple FICON
Directors and Fibre Channel Directors
is provided by this integrated switch
management system. Leveraging Java
®
technology, operators can use the EFC
Management software remotely from
virtually anywhere in the enterprise.
EFC management provides a scalable,
modular architecture consisting of the
EFC Server PC, the EFC Management
Software and the EFC Product Manager
application.
The architecture is implemented through
a multi tiered client/server networking
model. You can access all management,
monitoring and diagnostic functions by
running the EFC Management client
application on a workstation located
anywhere in the enterprise.
Enterprise Fabric Connectivity Server
The EFC Server PC centralizes manage-
ment of multiple Directors in the fabric
and continuously monitors their opera-
tions. The hardware, a laptop PC running
Windows NT, provides two Ethernet LAN
connections—one for a private LAN
that supports communication with the
Directors, and the second for an optional
connection to a corporate intranet for
remote workstation access.
The Server supports continuous Director
monitoring, logging, and alerting; central-
McDATA Viper SAN engine ViperASIC
™ serial cross bar technology delivers
scalable, 140 port nonblocking perfor-
mance with up to 28,000 MB/sec full
duplex bandwidth. Unique McDATA
single-stage switching architecture is
designed to provide consistently low
latency across all ports. Full throughput
at extended distances is supported with
longwave optics, 60 buffer credits for
each port and repeaters.
Other configuration options include
shortwave Universal Port Modules
(transmission distance up to 500 meters)
and, longwave Universal Port Modules
(transmission distance up to 20 kilome-
ters at 1 Gbps and 10 km at 2 Gbps). You
can combine Port Modules for scalabil-
ity from 16 to 140 ports.
Full interoperability with McDATA
Directors and Switches
The Intrepid 6140 Director utilizes
6064 Director switching technology
and firmware. This provides full
interoperability with 2 Gbps McDATA
Intrepid Directors and Sphereon
Switches and prior generation
McDATA Directors and Switches.
Multi-generation switch interoperability
enables a buy-and-grow SAN
implementation strategy.
High port density saves rack space
Rapidly growing Fibre Channel SAN
infrastructures place a premium on rack
space. McDATA Intrepid 6140 Director
requires only 12 U of rack space for
140 ports—this is 64 percent more
ports in same space required by the
Intrepid 6064 Director. Port density
improvement has been enabled by the
combination of use of SFF optical trans-
ceivers, serial architecture and improved
packaging.
